New electric rickshaws in Butwal need driving license now onwards

The reason why electric rickshaw drivers do not have license is: Transport officials could not decide whether the electric rickshaw should be treated as motorized vehicles or pedal-driven tricycles, which do not need license. Sushil Yadav, Chief of Regional Traffic Police Office Butwal, says any vehicle that is run by engine should be treated like motor vehicle as per the Motor Vehicles and Transport Management Act-1993. "All motors should be registered at transport office and their drivers should have licenses," says Yadav. "Since electric rickshaws engine-driven, they should be registered at transport office and their drivers must have licenses." Officials at the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) appeared hesitant to consider electric rickshaws as motor vehicles. Such riskshaws are already operating in Hetauda.
